Will IPL 2023 to have Substitute System? Know what is ‘Impact’ player

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is going to introduce a new rule in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy(SMAT) which is set to be commenced from 11th October.

Taking inspiration from the substitute player rules in sports like Rugby, football or Rugby, BCCI will introduce same kind of rule in SMAT 2022 in which a substitute player can either bat or ball in the innings. However, this rule is just experimental and BCCI have not thought of implementing it in future domestic tournaments or IPL.

As per the rule, captain needs to be mention the playing XI along with the 4 substitute players during the toss. The substitute player known as ‘impact’ player can come to play before the completion of 14th over. However, it is not mandatory for the teams to send substitute players, it’s upon the team management if they want to send an him or not.

The concept is to allow one substitute player per team to take a more active part in a match. This would add a new tactical/strategic dimension to the game. A number of team sports allow teams to make tactical substitutes i.e. football, rugby, basketball, baseball. The substitute is allowed to perform or participate like any other regular player,” BCCI note said.
