India clean swept West Indies in their own backyard on Thursday and Dhawan-led team created a rare feat of becoming the first Indian team to whitewash West Indies in their home in an ODI series after 39 years.
In the rain-affected game, India won the toss and elected to bat first. Captain Shikhar Dhawan shinned again as he made 58 runs in the match. But the standout performer of the match was Shubman Gill who slammed 98 runs and missed his deserving maiden century just by 2 runs due to rain. Apart from Gill & Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer also smashed 44 runs with the strike rate of 129 and helped India setting the target of 226 runs in 36 overs.
In response, West Indies did not have a good start as their top order batters Kyle Mayers & Shamarh Brooks got dismissed on ducks. However, Brandon King (42) and Nicholas Pooran (42) tried their best but it was not enough to achieve the target. Yuzi Chahal took 4W haul and dismantled the batting order of West Indies. Mohammad Siraj also took 2 wickets giving just 14 runs in his 3 overs spell.
Dhawan lauded Siraj after the match because of his disciplined and fierce bowling. Dhawan said that Siraj has belief on himself. He knows what to do, what field to set. As a captain, it becomes because of bowler like him. Siraj always backs himself, he knows what is correct and he understands his responsibility. Dhawan further added that Siraj bowled with pace and swing both which rest of the bowlers were failed to do.
