BCCI conducted e-auction for IPL media rights on Tuesday and showed the world why IPL is the biggest sports league in the world. The media rights were sold for whopping 48,390 crore in which Star India retained the TV rights for 57.5 crore per match in Package A & Viacom18 secured the digital rights for 50 crore per match in Package B.
The bidding was conducted as per game basis, it means the holders have to pay 118 crore per match for 5 straight years for 410 matches. 74 matches will be played in next seasons although the number of matches can be increase further for upcoming seasons. Disney Star have to pay 23,575 crore for 74 matches for TV rights while Viacom18 picked Package B for 20,500 crore and additional amount of 3258 crore named as package C.
Thus Viacom18 are bound to pay 23,758 crore for 74 matches. The Package C is for special category matches which includes 18-22 games per season. There is also a package D which compromises of 3 crore per match which includes overseas TV and Media rights were sold to Viacom18 & Times Internet for 1324 crore.
The Star India had the rights for both TV & digital media from 2018 to 2022 for 16,347.5 crore paying 54.5 crore per match. Now IPL media rights for the next 5 years is almost triple than 2018-2022 cycle. Hence it shows how valuable and colossal sports league IPL has become. IPL has now become the second most expensive and costliest league in the world after National Football League.
NFL receives 133 crore for one match while IPL will get 118 crore per match making it the second biggest sports league. IPL is now ahead of National Basketball Association & English premier League in terms of media rights per match.
