In charge Indian captain Shikhar Dhawan missed his well-deserved century by just 3 runs in the 1st India vs West Indies ODI match.
West Indies captain Nicholas Poora won the toss and opted to bowl first but the bowlers could not stand up. The opening pair of Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan put up a great start as both batters scored half centuries each. Gill returned to the pavilion after scoring a glorious knock of 64 runs. Pooran’s outstanding direct hit didn’t let the right-handed promising batter complete the single.
But Dhawan kept on progressing his innings and kept on scoring boundaries at regular intervals. But he missed his century by just 3 runs.
It was the fourth ball of the 34 th over on which Windies spinner Gudakesh Motie trapped Dhawan with his spin. Dhawan went for a lofted shot over the cover but the ball got his edge and Sharmarh Brooks completed an outstanding catch. Eventually, the stand-in Indian captain had to return on 97 runs.
But the start he has given the team along with Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, the team will look up to put on a big total over the hosts from here.
