After Rohit Sharma has been announced as full time Indian captain, seven different players have led the team in this short span of time which has never happened in Indian cricket.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believed in stability and continuity firmly in his playing days. But India had to play under different captains in recent times.
Sourav celebrated his birthday on Thursday, the 8th of July. After the celebration, the BCCI president addressed several issues including the thought behind the choice of different captains.

About how much continuity has been affected by the choice of different captains:
He believes that it isn’t ideal for a team to play under this many captains. But there were unavoidable situations under which they had to make those decisions. He explained Rohit wasn’t ready to lead against South Africa so Rishabh Pant was given the duty. The same case was with KL Rahul in the recent home series against South Africa who was unavilable due to injury. Again Rohit was unable to play the test match against England due to Covid so Jasprit Bumrah got the opportunity. The calendar is made such that they couldn’t avoid the situation and they have to feel for head coach Rahul Dravid as he has to work with different captains in different series.
About the tight schedule and fitness of the players:
Sourav believes that a player’s match fitness and game improve with match time. They have to take the field more to improve their game. Despite IPL, the number of matches the Indian team plays now is almost the same as the number of matches Sourav’s team used to play per year.
About the increment of IPL teams and whether it would compromise player quality:
The BCCI president said clearly that he does believe this as in India there is a pool of talent and it will increase with the passage of time. He also added to look at the two teams (white ball and red ball) and the players’ quality to understand how much quality players have been produced over the years in this country.
About Experience and Challenges as BCCI president:
Sourav replies, when he became president of BCCI with members’ consents, it was a great moment for him to be selected to work for the betterment of Indian cricket. He has been able to conduct two seasons of IPL and the domestic tournament in the Covid Pandemic situation which was a great challenge for him. But his past experience as CAB president has helped him.
Prince of Calcutta has also addressed some of his achievements and memories in the Indian dressing room. On his 50th birthday it’s sure all the Indian Cricket fans would shower love on their beloved “Dada”.
